On Site Archaeological Dig

Due to the archaeological significance of the discovery of the spring box, a study team from Salve Regina was invited to conduct an Archaeological excavation of the site.

The archaeologic excavation in 2021 found many artifacts helping to date and illustrate activities that took place at the site.  Hundreds of items have been found. The excavation uncovered many partial pipe stems, ceramic and porcelain pieces. These discoveries tell us about the habits and culture of the people living then and the materials they used on a daily basis. The pipes date as far back as 1650 and a stoneware handle marked with a “K” has been traced to a manufacturer in Konigsberg, Germany in 1800.
